The new Blazer has been selecting as the new vehicle for this years EcoCAR Mobility Challenge. Sponsored by the U.S Department of Energy this competition sees 12 different universities attempting to get the most efficiency out of the the vehicle. Whats unique to it is that it spans over the course of 4 years and wont conclude until the summer of 2022. Teams will also be responsible for producing electrified powertrains and Level 2 autonomous driving tech. 2019 Chevy Blazer Picked For EcoCAR Challenge | GM Authority

That will heavily depend on what sort of hybrid options we see from rivals, but I agree that its likely to take less than 4 years. Ford could already be developing that kind of powertrain for the upcoming Bronco.

GM is also ending the Volt and Malibu, following the decisions that Ford has made to end their unprofitable sedan models. Sales have seen a huge drop off over the past few years, and that much will probably be re invested in successful platforms and brand new models (more crossovers ugh).

There has been a wide misconception that SUV's are safer and I think that's one of the main reasons why they have become so popular. They are very poorly packaged vehicles when you simply look at them as commuters.
